The phrase “We the people” in the opening line of the Constitution of the United States of America, is a statement both of privilege and responsibility. It is a truth not only of a nation, but also of all groups of people who have united together in a common belief and purpose, such as a church. Being part of a nation like ours brings with it great benefits of privilege that most nations do not or will not or cannot offer to its people. This is why people migrate to America and most who migrate away from America often return to America. The sad reality is that people who leave other nations, come here and try to make America where they came from, forgetting the reasons for which they left that country and often end up ruining ours a bit in the process. The same is true for people moving away from liberal states and turning conservative states into liberal states. “We the people” benefit from living in this nation that we call home, but “We the people” also bear the responsibility for keeping it a nation we want to call home. We bear the responsibility for keeping it safe and protecting it from those who seek to destroy us. As citizens of this land, we must take seriously our responsibility for our nation because we are the people of the nation. We need to vote wisely and be informed of candidates and ballot measures to vote well because elections have consequences as is evident in New York state and city as well as many other places. We need to be willing to run for office as well and serve in agencies that protect our citizens. Evil will prevail when good people are idle and are irresponsible doing nothing to take care of their community, society, or nation. We need godly school board members to help keep schools accountable for educating our children instead indoctrinating them with liberal ideologies and socialistic agendas. “We the people” also applies to churches. It is up to the people in the church to help the church function properly, biblically, and effectively. It is up to the people of the church to make sure the ministry of the church is funded financially, prayerfully, and with workers getting the ministry done. If the people of any church are idle and irresponsible for their church, then church ministry will suffer for it and decline. As long as the majority of people are willing to sit by, being content letting someone else do it, then not much will get done. “We the people” must take ownership of what we are the people of if things are going to be well into the future. If our children and grandchildren see the adults in their lives not being engaged in what they are part of, then those children will become adults not seeing the need for them to be involved at all. After that takes place for a generation or two, we will be part of something that is nothing like the nation or the church we are now “We the people” of at all.
