TEXT: Psalm 143
1. The Holy Spirit helps us honor God when we are overwhelmed (vv. 1-4)
A. Seeking the Lord in prayer is helpful when we are overwhelmed (v. 1)
B. Seeking God’s mercy when overwhelmed by temptation is comforting (v. 2)
C. Seeking help from God when our enemies overwhelm us is supportive (v. 3)
D. Seeking God’s grace when overwhelmed makes us feel empty is uplifting (v. 4)
II. The Holy Spirit helps us with our thoughts when we are overwhelmed (vv. 5-6)
A. Remebering the blessings of God (v. 5a)
B. Meditating on the works of God (v. 5b)
C. Trusting in the Lord helps us have peace in hard times (v. 6; Isaiah 26:3-4)
1. Reaching out to the Lord in faith for His help
2. Desiring the help of the Lord in dependency on Him
3. Seeking filling from God when there is no other hope for the need to be met
III. The Holy Spirit can strengthen our spirit when it is fainting (vv. 7-12)
A. What is he asking for from God?
1. Hear me (v. 7a)
2. Cause me (v. 8a, 8c)
3. Deliver me (v. 9a)
4. Teach me (v. 10a)
5. Lead me (v. 10c)
6. Quicken me (v. 11)
B. Why is he asking for it from God?
1. My spirit fails me (v. 7b)
2. I trust in thee (v. 8b)
3. I lift up my soul unto thee (v. 8d)
4. I flee unto thee (v. 9b)
5. Thou art my God (v. 10b)
6. I am thy servant (v. 12c)
* For thy name’s sake (v. 11b)
* For thy righteousness’ sake (v. 11c)
C. How is he going to benefit from it?
1. Seeking the Lord for His work in your life (v. 7)
* His spirit is failing him
* His efforts alone will end him up in a pit of despair
* He is needing God to do for him what he knows he is incapable of doing for himself
2. Hearing the lovingkindness of the LORD each morning (v. 8a)
* As you start your day
* As preparation for your day
* Before the need arises and the troubles begin
3. Being teachable in the will of God for your life (v. 10a)
4. Trusting in the LORD to be your God (v. 10b)
5. Letting God’s good Spirit lead you in living life right with God (v. 10c)
6. Benefitting from the goodness of God by His good Spirit working (v. 10c; Ephesians 5:8-11)
