TEXT: Romans 6:8-19
Introduction: From Lesson #19 on Jan. 8 Romans 8:1-11
III. It helps us to live in the Spirit to life in God’s righteousness (vv. 9-11)
A. At salvation our spirit is made alive by the Holy Spirit indwelling us (v. 9)
1. Being in relationship with the Spirit of God is how we become saved
2. Having the Spirit of God in you is the best evidence of biblical Salvation
3. If we do not have the Holy Spirit living in us then we are not born again
B. The Holy Spirit makes our spirit alive, but our flesh is still dead in sin (v. 10)
1. The Holy Spirit brings to us the Resurrection life of Jesus to live eternally
2. The spiritual life the Holy Spirit brings to us means we cannot die spiritually
3. We need to live physically in the reality of the life that we have in Jesus spiritually (Romans 6:8-19)
I. Salvation is about dying so we can live (vv. 8-10)
A. We identify with Christ in His death for our sins by faith in Him (v. 8a)
B. We die to the bondage of sin spiritually so we can live with Him (v. 8b)
C. We identify with Christ in His resurrection for eternal life with Him (vv. 9-10)
1. He died once unto to sin for Salvation, we identify with His death once in Salvation
2. He was raised form the dead once, we receive His eternal life once in Salvation
3. As death had no power over Christ once He had risen, spiritual death has no power over us once we are saved (John 11:26; Hebrews 2:9-15)
4. He paid the price for our sins once in His sacrifice and resurrection, we receive Him into our lives to save us once forever
5. We are to live unto God once we have trust in Christ
II. Fasting and prayer is a vital part of our sanctification while on earth (vv. 11-13)
A. Salvation makes us dead to sin in our soul and alive unto God (v. 11)
B. Sanctification helps us not let sin control us in our flesh more (v. 12)
C. Fasting and prayer helps us yield to the Holy Spirit in sanctification (vv. 13-14)
1. Strengthening us in our spirit through His Spirit not yielding to our flesh
2. Yielding to God and His Spirit in our spirit by actively saying no to our flesh
3. Working against sin seeking dominion over our flesh by yielding to His grace
III. Sanctification is about yielding more to God and less to our flesh (vv. 15-19)
A. God’s grace is not a license to sin but liberty to live for His glory (v. 15)
B. What we yield to in our desires determines the control of our actions (v. 16)
C. Salvation makes us free from the bondage of sin to live unto God (vv. 17-18)
D. We need to yield to God’s Spirit like we use to yield to sin’s control (v. 18)
