TEXT: Romans 8:1-11
I. It helps those in Christ to be sensitive to His Spirit (vv. 1-3)
A. To not be controlled by our flesh (v. 1)
B. To live under the authority of the Spirit (v. 2)
C. To live in the victory that Jesus won for us (v. 3)
II. It helps those in Christ be submitted to the Spirit (vv. 4-8)
A. For God’s righteousness to be evident in our life (vv. 4-5a)
B. For God’s life and peace to be experienced in our life (vv. 5b-6)
C. For God’s pleasure to be exacted by us in our life (vv. 7-8)
III. It helps us to live in the Spirit to life in God’s righteousness (vv. 9-11)
A. At salvation, our spirit is made alive by the Holy Spirit indwelling us (v. 9)
1. Being in relationship with the Spirit of God is how we become saved (Galatians 3:3; 4:4-7; 5:15, 25)
2. Having the Spirit of God in you is the best evidence of biblical Salvation (Romans 8:12-17)
3. If we do not have the Holy Spirit living in us then we are not born again (Ephesians 1:12-14; 4:30)
B. The Holy Spirit makes our spirit alive, but our flesh is still dead in sin (v. 10)
1. The Holy Spirit brings to us the Resurrection life of Jesus to live eternally (John 11:25-26)
2. The spiritual life the Holy Spirit brings to us means we cannot die spiritually (Luke 20:36-38)
3. We need to live physically in the reality of the life that we have in Jesus spiritually (Romans 6:8-19)
C. One day our flesh will be made new in God’s righteousness as well (v. 11)
1. One day we will be glorified with Jesus to live in His presence eternally (I Thessalonians 4:13-18)
2. Our spirit is already glorified in Heaven with God eternally (Ephesians 2:4-10)
3. On that day all the redeemed will be given a glorified body for eternity (I Corinthians 15:50-58)
