To benefit from God’s love in our life the most, we need to first enter into a relationship with Him through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ, as our Saviour. As John 10:7-9 declares, Jesus is the door to enter into the sheepfold of God in relationship with Him. In John 10:11, Jesus also declares Himself to be the “good shepherd” and that He is willing to “give his life for the sheep.” In both Testaments of the Bible, we see the image of the shepherd and the sheep as a type of our relationship we enter into with our Heavenly Father. This image helps us with understanding the sacrifice that has been made for us to belong to God and the dependency we have on Him for this relationship to be fully enjoyed in our life. Jesus also used this imagery to help us understand the dire condition we find ourselves in when we stray away from a close fellowship of intimacy with the Good Shepherd. In Luke 15 and Matthew 18, Jesus uses a parable of the shepherd to display the shepherd’s great love to leave the flock of sheep to go find the one sheep that has wandered away from the fold. God does not want His children to destroy ourselves in the wilderness apart from His care and protection of intimacy with Him. God wants us to fully benefit from our relationship with Him through His Son. Jesus wants us to enjoy His love fully in our life. But we clearly see that Satan does not want us to and even wants to keep us from experiencing it at all in John 10:10 and many other truths of Scripture. The thief, Satan, wants to destroy us in eternity in Hell, but even if we are saved, he wants to destroy our testimony as a child of God and usefulness as a servant of God. Satan wants to steal the Gospel away from anyone who hears it so it does not produce faith in them to trust in Christ as their Saviour as we see in parable of the sower recorded in Matthew 13, Mark 4, and Luke 8. For the believer in Christ, Satan wants to steal from us the joy we can have in intimate fellowship with our Saviour by allowing ourselves to rebel by continuing in sin. It is critical for God’s children to daily RENEW our fellowship with the Lord in our personal life. It is vital for us to daily connect with our Heavenly Father in repentance, listening to Him speak to us from His Word, keeping ourselves sensitive to His Spirit by listening to Him speak to our spirit as we commune in fellowship with the Lord, and spending time before His throne in prayer. These relational practices and disciplines help us to RENEW our enjoyment of His love for us in close relationship with Him and not allow ourselves to drift apart in the business of life or the deceitfulness of sin and the world. We need to RENEW our expression of love to the Lord and our enjoyment of His love in our life daily.
