God’s Mandate to Educate

Deuteronomy 6:7

“And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children,

and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house,

and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”

God’s Word is very clear on the command of God to parents to train their children and help them grow into godly, responsible adults functioning effectivly to His glory. Every parent must make those decisions personally, but it is best to seek the Lord in His will in educating their children to God’s glory. Teri and I decided that we believed God wanted us to educate our children from a biblical worldview. Therefore, we chose a Christian school to begin with when we were in Indiana. When our children got a bit older, we felt the Christian school was not as in line with our desires for our girls any longer, so we began to home school with the help and counsel of some friends who had been doing it from the beginning of their children’s education. We all will answer to God for the life we live and the decisions we make in life for ourselves and for our family, so it behooves us to seek the Lord and His wisdom from His Word on His will in the matters we will answer to Him about. No one should home school unless they are going to take it seriously and be disciplined with the training of their children. We are responsible to make sure our children are able to read to understand information, write so others can know what they are writing, do enough math to be able to balance a checkbook and manage their finances responsibly, and reason in their thinking to be able to make wise decisions in life as adults. Sadly, too many children in public school are getting more anti-God, socialistic, humanistic, and evolutionary propaganda, than they are reading, writing, and arithmetic training. But unfortunately, there are a few homeschoolers that are not doing too much better. No matter what form of education you choose for your children, you are responsible to make sure your children are making steady progress in order to be ready for adulthood. Also, no matter what form of education you feel led by God to use for the children He blesses you with, you are also responsible for the spiritual development of your children so they know God in their life as Heavenly Father and are equipped to live to His glory in service to Him.
