TEXT: Matthew 17:14-23
Introduction: vv. 1-13; Mark 9
>Mark 2:19-20 “…and then shall they fast in those days.”
>Jesus is away on a special assignment with Peter, James, & John
>Jesus is displaying His glory to these three disciples who would be key after His departure as stated in Galatians 2:9
>God the Son is exalted by God the Father in the presence of these three disciples
I. Sometimes fasting & praying is the only solution to faithlessness (vv. 14-17)
A. It helps us access the presence of God more (v. 14)
B. It helps us help others with the provision of God more (v. 15)
C. It helps us to experience the power of God in our lives (vv. 16-17; I John 4:1-6, 13)
II. Sometimes fasting & praying is the best weapon against Satan (vv. 18-21)
A. For greater faith to see victory (vv. 18-20a; Matthew 28:18-20)
B. For greater power to see progress (v. 20; Matthew 21:22; Mark 11:22-24; I Timothy 2:8; Hebrews 11:6; James 1:4-8)
C. For greater results to see deliverance (v. 21)
III. Sometimes fasting & praying is a great way to process sadness (vv. 22-23)
A. Jesus shares this sad news after teaching them this helpful truth (v. 22)
B. Jesus was preparing them for His own departure into Heaven (v. 23a)
C. Jesus was helping them before they even needed it (v. 23b)
1. God’s Word helps us with truth to prepare us for what we will need
2. God’s Spirit prepares us with growth to help us be ready when we need it
3. God’s work in us helps us be able to withstand what we will face before it
