TEXT:  Matthew 9:14-17

• Introduction: vs. 14 A reasonable and respectful question?
  It is worded as an inquiry not a challenge
  The intent was for understanding not to trap
  The issue is a normal spiritual discipline by many at the time and before
• I. Fasting is mourning of the soul over the flesh (v. 15a)
  A. Courtship and preparing for a wedding is a festive event
  B. Jesus made the connection with fasting and mourning Himself
  C. When Jesus was here there was no reason to mourn
• II. Fasting was expected of Jesus by His followers (v. 15b)
  A. After His departure
  B. Because of the condition of the world
  C. To submit our flesh to the Holy Spirit
  D. Anticipating His return
• III. Fasting is encouraged by the Holy Spirit (vv. 16-17; II Corinthians 5:17-21; Romans 8:29)
  A. As long as we are on this earth
  B. As long as we are in this flesh
  C. As long as we want to be submitted to His Kingdom
