TEXT:   Matthew 2:1-18

Introduction: Let us Come & Bow Down     Psalm 95:6; Matthew 11:28-30; 19:14; Mark 10:14; Luke 18:16

I. Worship is an activity that is done on purpose (vv. 1-2)

  1. Where they came from (v. 1)
  2. What caused them to come (v. 2a; John 1:1-14; 8:12; 9:5; Numbers 24:17; Isaiah 60:3; Revelation 22:16)
  3. Why they came (v. 2b)

II. Worship is an activity some are not genuine about (vv. 3-8)

  1. Some who know the right information still do not worship (vv. 3-6)
  2. Some who say they worship do not truly worship (v. 7)
  3. Some who come to worship truly do truly worship (v. 8)

III. Worship is an activity that you must be engaged in personally (vv. 9-11)

  1. Worship is something that you must go and do (v. 9)
  2. Worship is something that brings joy into your soul (v. 10; Psalm 122:1)
  3. Worship is something that displays value to what is worshipped (v. 11)
  1. By focusing attention on the object of worship—“they saw the young child”
  2. By humbling ourselves before the one we worship—“fell down”
  3. By honoring the one being worshipped—“worshipped Him.”
  4. By offering gifts unto the one being worshipped
  • “opened their treasures”
  • “they presented unto him gifts”  Genesis 4:3-5; 22:3; Exodus 29:18; Romans 12:1-2; Hebrews 13:12-16
  1. By acknowledging the significance of the one worshipped

IV. Worship is an activity that produces fruit in lives who do it (vv. 12-18)

  1. It produces the fruit of more sensitivity to God (vv. 12-13)
  2. It produces fruit of obedience to the will of God (vv. 13-18)
  3. It produces the fruit of God being glorified, His Word fulfilled, and Satan defeated

Action Points:

  • Have you truly worshipped biblically today?
  • Have you truly obeyed God and His Word to you today?
  • Have you pleased and glorified God today or Satan?
  • How will you worship Him this week with the fruit of obedience to Him and His Word ?
