God makes several statements in His Word about making things new. In Isaiah, He speaks of doing a new thing in His work on earth with mankind. Later in this prophetic book and in Jeremiah, He declares it to be a new covenant with man. In Isaiah 66, He states that He will make a new heaven and a new earth, which He reiterates in Revelation 21:5. In the book of Ezekiel 18:31, God declares that He would make a new heart and spirit as He removes our transgressions in His redemptive plan through His Son Jesus Christ coming to this earth in the Incarnation. God’s Salvation makes us new in our inner man as His Spirit comes into our soul with His righteousness to make us a child of God and give to us His eternal life. Only God can truly make us new because He alone is the Creator. He alone is righteous. He is not temporal like us. He is eternal and transcends us as mere mortals; therefore, He alone can make us new. All we can do for ourselves through our own efforts is to merely improve ourselves, but we cannot make ourselves new. The religions of man also cannot make us new. They can give us new information and give us new philosophies or disciplines to make changes with our outer existence, but our inner being is still the same. Only God can give us newness in our soul with His life and righteousness which is beyond what anything or anyone else can do for us. Jesus described the newness that He offers us from God the Father as something that is able to be constantly refreshing itself. In John 7:38, Jesus said that if we believe on Him, we will have rivers of living water flowing from within us. Sadly, too often true believers can allow what God intended to be constantly renewing in us with a vibrant relationship with Him to become stale and ritualistic. Sadly, too many people are settling for what only they can do for themselves or what man’s religion can offer them and completely missing out on what only God can provide. If you are truly born again, don’t let your relationship with God to become anything but what God intended and Jesus paid for you to experience in Him. If you never have been born again, don’t allow yourself to miss out on what you can have with God in Christ.
