The root of the word “memorial” is linked to the “memory,” therefore memorials remind us of something or someone by focusing our mind on what once was. It is the reminder of something or someone of or belonging to our past. It has to do with the record or memory of the past that we should be mindful of and appreciative for in the present. Memorials are intended to make us remember people, places, and events that are significant to our past, our lives, and our history. When we were on our trip back in March, we went to some memorials that reminded me of people, places, and events that were part of my memories and I wanted to share them with Kenneth. This past Friday, we had a celebration of the life of Nodja Flippo, who was a long-time, faithful member of Summerville Baptist Church. She taught children’s Sunday School classes for over three decades. She played the organ and piano in our worship services for the same length of time. She also sang solos and specials with family members. I remember her singing “Go Tell It on the Mountain” and “His Eye is on the Sparrow” in our services several times. She was a blessing to her family and church family, touching the lives of so many who knew her. We will also be having a Memorial Service for my mother, Patricia Humber, later this month on Saturday, May 30th hosted by our church family. This past Friday was also National Peace Officer’s Memorial Day to remind us all of the men and women who have given their lives in law enforcement service in our nation. The week before was National Firefighters Memorial Day to recognizing the brave men and women who have sacrificed themselves in the fire service of our nation. Last Sunday we remembered and honored mothers for Mother’s Day and the month will end with Memorial Day to remember and recognize those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in military service in the United States Armed Forces. There are significant people, places, and events that have taken place in our history that should never be forgotten and, therefore, must be remembered by memorials that help us think about them and appreciate the significance of that memory to our life today.
