WED: “A TRUE WITNESS PROCLAIMS GOD’S ETERNAL LIFE”

TEXT:  JOHN 5:15-29

Introduction: The back story John 5:1-14
I. A True Witness does the work of God the Father (vv. 15-16)
A. It is always the right day to honor God the Father (vv. 16)
B. It is always the right time to obey the will of God the Father (vv. 17)
C. It is always potentially costly to speak truth about God (vv. 18)
II. A True Witness offers God’s life to others (vv. 17-22)
A. God offers man eternal life through Jesus, and we should too (vv. 19)
B. Love motivated the Son to obey the Father, and it should motivate us too (vv. 20; John 3:16)
C. Jesus came to make God’s life in us possible, and we should too (vv. 21-22)
1. God’s life is more powerful than death
2. We need to make it possible for others
III. A True Witness speaks the word of life to others (vv. 23-27)
A. The truth is that to honor God means to honor the whole Godhead (v. 23)
B. The Word of God is the truth of eternal life people must hear (v. 24)
C. God speaks to the hearts of people from His Word being proclaimed (vv. 25-26)
D. God’s Word will be the source of Jesus’ judgment in the end of time (v. 27)
1. God has given our judgment unto His Son (John 5:22; Acts 10:42; 17:31)
2. Jesus will be our Judge because He is the redeemer (Philippians 2:5-11)
3. The books will be opened for us to be judged (Revelation 20:11-12)

IV. A True Witness helps prepare people for eternity (vv. 28-29)
A. Jesus’ resurrection guarantees our resurrection (v. 28; I Corinthians 15:20, 23; Acts 26:23; Romans 8:11; Colossians 1:16; I Peter 1:3; Revelation 1:5)
B. There are two resurrections mentioned in Scripture (v. 29; Revelation 20:1-6; 14:13; 2:11; 20:14; 22:7)
C. Eternity for everyone will be experienced in an eternal physical state with a glorified body.   v. 29; I Corinthians 15:47-58; PHILIPPIANS 3:21
