TEXT: Colossians 1:15-20
Introduction: Who is “who” that is the image of the invisible God? (v. 15)
I. Why is He the firstborn of every creature (vv. 16-17)
- Because He is the Creator God of all things (v. 16; John 1:1-3
- Because He is the Eternal God before all things (v. 17a; Genesis 1:1, 26-31)
- Because He is the Almighty God that sustains His creation (v. 17b) “consist”
II. He is Creator of Motherhood (vv. 16-17)
- All things were created by Him and for Him and consists by Him
- Created by His design and power
- Created for His purpose and glory
- Consists by His will being done in it
- Biology was created by Him and for Him and consists by Him (Genesis 1:11-12, 21-22, 24-25)
- Marriage was created by Him and for Him and consists by Him (Matthew 19:1-6; Genesis 2:16-25; 3:21-24)
- Motherhood was created by Him and for Him and consists by Him (Genesis 2:23-25; 3:20)
- God created the act of marital intimacy (Gen. 2:23-24)
- God’s power over childbirth is stated in His curse due to sin (Gen. 3:16)
- God is credited with the cause of life in mothering (Gen. 4:1)
III. He is the head of all things in creation (vv. 18-20)
- He is the head of all of His creation as the originator of it (vv. 17-18)
- He is the head of His body of baptized believers as the originator of it (v. 18)
- He is the firstborn from the dead as our resurrected Saviour (v. 18)
- He is the reconciler of all things unto Himself (vv. 19-20)
