Such a Strange Way to Save the World

Sister Sherry sang a song recently that bares this title and truly the Biblical narrative of the nativity is nothing less than a very unique and rather odd record of history indeed. There is very little, if any of God’s plan of redemption that makes sense to the reasoning of human logic. God coming down to earth? Why would He do that? The Creator of the universe humbling Himself into the like of His creation just is not reasonable. The Holiest entity in all of eternity would take upon Himself the likeness of sinful flesh is very odd indeed. The Saviour of the world being born in barn, placed in a feeding trough, and raised to manhood by a carpenter and his bride who were in need of the Salvation only He could offer them, now how does that work? A man raised up to be a carpenter becoming a preacher of revolutionary theology and going against the conventional religion of the day– just sounds like a recipe for disaster, doesn’t it? And for that matter, how in the world can something that happened two millennia before my birth have any relevance to me and my life today? How can you be a king of a kingdom by dying on a cross and not winning a major military battle? How do you rule over people by serving them and how do you save them by suffering for them? All of these, and so many more of the realities of the Biblical narrativity of the Christmas story, are absolutely counterintuitive to say the least, which is truly the whole point of it all. This is precisely what God has declared in His Word about Himself and His plan of His work on earth when He had the prophet Isaiah record His Words in Isaiah 55:8&9 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” This is also what is meant when many people use the phrase, “The Lord works in mysterious ways.” God’s redemption of sinful men is designed in such a way that it defies human reasoning and comprehension, which is exactly why we cannot achieve it on our own nor take any credit for the accomplishment of it. We cannot do it ourselves, and we would have never planned it this way if we had the chance. This is why no one will ever experience it apart from God’s Word and God’s Spirit working in their heart to help them understand His truth and His way to a right relationship with Him. Here is another reality in this strange way to save the world– that He would use redeemed humans to reach unredeemed humans with this strange message of redemption. We cannot do that on our own either.
