Joh 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
Joh 13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
In this Scripture, Jesus makes a declaration of the emotion of loving others in verse 34. God’s children should love one another in our commonness as human beings created in the image of God equally and in our commonness as fellow believers in Jesus Christ. We need to love both the saved and the lost. Jesus said this is a new commandment, and the newness of it is in the demonstration of the love that He showed to others as He lived on this earth in human form when He stepped out of His eternal existence in Heaven to come to earth to live among us, to show God’s love to us, and to die for our sins on the cross before He rose victorious over death, sin, and the grave. But Jesus took His first statement of the processing of this emotion of love for others to a completely different level for us that He also displayed for us in addressing the action of love TO one another in verse 35. The love Jesus is referring to and that He demonstrated was not merely a feeling that one felt within themselves, but rather it led to actions that impacted the lives of others. Our love also needs to have a positive impact on those around us. Our fellow man, our neighbors, our friends, our family, our church family, the missionaries in the regions beyond us, as well as the souls they are reaching, all need to be positively impacted by the love that we have TO them. They ought to know we love them without any doubt by the words we speak to them and by the actions we display before them. This is what love To one another means and what it looks like. Jesus also said this testimony of our love displayed for one another is a witness to others of the love we have received from God TO us in our faith in Jesus Christ as our Saviour. Don’t let loving others and friend’s day be restricted to events on our church ministry calendar as well as family evangelism. If you are a blood bought child of God, then demonstrate the love you have received from God to those around you every day, so they can see your testimony of it as well as hear your witness of it, which is what Proverbs 17:17 is referring to when it says “A friend loveth at all times.” Jesus is the best friend anyone can ever have that truly loves at all times and everyone needs to be introduced to Him.
