“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
Today we reflect on and commemorate those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty in their service to their fellow citizens. September 11th has come to be known as Patriot Day in remembrance of the loss of lives in the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the war against terror since that day. In that attack, our country lost 2,977 lives. Planes were used to attack the World Trade Center Towers and the Pentagon, as well as another plane whose attack was thwarted by brave people who kept the terrorist from making their target when the plane crashed in Shanksville, PA. On that day, 343 firefighters and 71 law enforcement officers gave their lives in their attempt to help rescue others from the devastation of these attacks. Heroes are those who face their fears and put themselves in harm’s way for the sake of helping others. Since that time, thousands of others in our military have lost their lives in the war on terror as a result of those attacks. Every year, brave men and women in uniforms of service give the ultimate sacrifice of their lives in their service to help others. This year alone 98 law enforcement officers, 62 firefighters, and 23 military personnel have given the ultimate sacrifice in their line of service to their fellow man. Another person that gave the ultimate sacrifice in their line of duty for their fellow man is the Lord Jesus Christ. He sacrificed the glory, splendor, and comfort of His eternal home in order to come to earth to serve to meet our need. Jesus willingly set aside His eternal glory as God to come to earth in human form in order to be our kinsman redeemer to pay the debt of our sin. Jesus, as the all-powerful God and Creator of the universe, willingly humbled Himself to be our sacrifice for sin as the Lamb of God to take away the curse of sin from repentant sinners like me and you. The best way for us to honor the life of someone who has sacrificed their life is to continue their legacy of how they lived sacrificially in living our own lives serving those around us. The best way we can honor Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice is to receive Him as our personal Saviour and follow Him as our Lord living our lives in service with Him.
